Travel Tip - Health and Safety

Researching health and safety before travelling is essential to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here are some factors to take into consideration when travelling.

Research Your Destination

Before booking or travelling make sure to check for the latest health advisories and safety concerns on the government websites. Also it is worthwhile to look up emergency numbers and medical centres locations near your accommodation.

Travel Insurance

It is important to sort out your travel insurance as soon as you have booked your travel, it helps cover health emergencies, cancellations and lost luggage. Ensure to get the right cover for your cruise, i.e. add cruise or skiing options if that is the type of holiday you are going on. Also make sure to take a copy of the policy with you.

Vaccinations and Medications

It is important to check what vaccinations you need for the destination you are visiting, and get yourself booked in to receive them in plenty of time. Also check what medications are allowed for the destination as countries have different rules on medications.

Food and Water Safety

It is advisable in most countries to drink bottle water as the tap water might not be safe to drink. Try to avoid eating anything raw or undercooked!

Sun Protection

Make sure to wear high SPF sun screen, it helps to protect your skin from burning and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. Also where possible wear sunglasses and a hat to help protect your face and eyes.

Stay Alert

With the rise of pick pockets and phone theft, make sure to be aware of your surroundings. Try to avoid overpopulated areas. Keep belongings in zipped up, secured bags/pockets when out and about, it might be worthwhile to get a cross body bag and keep it in front of you.

Emergency Contact List

Have a list of emergency numbers, including the embassy for your country by keeping a copy on your phone and a paper version with your belongings. Give a list of accommodation details to your emergency contact back at home as back up in case anything goes wrong.

Know Local Laws and Customs

Research the local culture before travelling, especially dress codes, as what might be okay in the UK might not be the Middle East or in certain buildings like churches where you need to be covered. Be aware that certain behaviours might not be welcomed when you travel to your destination.
