Italy - Trips Review
During my week in Italy we explored the Amalfi coast and Capri and it was an interesting experience.
We got an small ferry over to Capri and let me say it was chaotic when we got there. With multiple ferries coming into and out of port dropping off and collecting tourists it made it a madhouse. The tram up to the top was busy, I saw the public buses crammed full of people and the cafes/bars full of people. So as there was 6 of us we went for a private taxi to the top of the town to avoid the overstuffing of the public transport. The top was just as chaotic as the port with tourists being dropped off and started to walk along the streets. It was fun dodging people and vehicles trying to explore the town and unfortunately we couldn’t really enjoy it. The prices for drinks at some of the bars were too much to be worth stopping for one. Luckily we found a couple of bars back down at the port that we managed to get into and it was cheaper. One bar Il Gabbiano was friendly place that moved around some tables for us so we could sit together. We didn’t get a chance to see the other side of Capri island so can’t comment on whether it is worth visiting or not, but of what I did see it might be worth going when it’s out of season to avoid as many of the other tourists as possible.
The next day we took another ferry trip but this time we went off to Positano and Amalfi and it was a bit disappointing. The towns look so vibrant and pretty on the internet but when you see it in reality the buildings are not are bright, they need repainting to get that vibrancy back. The towns are busy with tourists, making it difficult to get around to explore the small streets and squares. It didn’t help that we only had a short amount of time in each location. Again it is one of those places better to be explored off season to avoid the crowds of visitors.
Thankfully Sorrento made up for the disappointing Capri, Positano and Amalfi as it is a charming place, not so busy so we can walk along the small lanes comfortably and then to the cliff tops to see the amazing view. We also found the best place to have lunch, Enjoy The Little Things Bistrot, which can be found on Via S. Cesareo. It’s a small family run restaurant and let me tell you the food was amazing, the best we had. It worked because the food had simple tasty flavours and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend Sorrento and the restaurant.
Overall it is good to experience these places and don’t be put off by my thoughts as everyone enjoys different things but it will be worthwhile going when it’s not the busy season so you can explore the towns without the hordes of visitors.
