Weekend in Ambleside

Ambleside is a pretty market town based at the northern end of Lake Windermere and the perfect spot to base yourself if you are wanting to explore the national park.

The town has plenty of shops including gift shops, chocolate & ice cream shops, and outdoor clothing & equipment shops to help you get outfitted for your explorations of the lakes.

I had to visit the chocolate shops and stock up on artisan chocolates, my sweet tooth always costs me money!! The shop I went into was Old Bank House Chocolate Shop, there was variety of chocolates to choose from and it’s heaven for any chocolate lovers.

Alongside the shops there are traditional pubs, restaurants and cafes to cater all tastes. We had a few drinks in each of the following pubs - make sure to visit if you are in the area.

The Temperance Inn - has a bit of a prohibition feel to the pub.

Royal Oak - small traditional pub with wooden beams and traditional pub decoration, giving you a cosy pub feel

The White Lion Hotel - large traditional pub with plenty of places to sit, but got busy in the evening

The Ambleside Inn - large pub but the way it is decorated gives you a warm, cosy, comfortable feeling

We also had delicious, tasty meals in the following restaurants.

Ishaas Indian Eatery - good range of meals to choose from, the place feels like they converted an old shop into a restaurant so quite open and basic, food was good though

Jintana Thai Restaurant Ambleside - smallish restaurant that has been decorated nicely, even has a ‘tuk-tuk’ where a lucky couple can sit in for their meal, good range of meals to choose from and what we had was delicious

Ambleside was a good spot to base ourselves in and it gave me a sense of a relaxed atmosphere, there was nothing flashy so we felt comfortable and chilled out. It seemed a lot of walkers were based there as we saw a lot coming back from their day’s walk. We went for a weekend in March and lucked out with the weather as it was glorious sunshine during the day, rained a bit at night, but it got busy with people so can imagine it will be very busy during the summer months.
